  8. !Guardian can recognise the following known viruses. If you think you
  9. have found one that is not on this list, then please let me know, so that
  10. I can modify !Guardian appropriately.

  12. !Guardian also copes with a large number of viruses not currently on this
  13. list, but ones which either do not have a simple description and/or are
  14. variants of those listed below or those which I couldn't be bothered to
  15. update this document.

  17. Despite some people listing loads of different viruses, there are not in
  18. fact that many viruses on the Archimedes, so please don't alarm yourself
  19. too much with some peoples scare mongering techniques.
  20.  
  21. virus name         Description/version of !Guardian that deals with it

  23. ArchieVirus        Versions 2.10 upwards
  24. (also known as     The ArchieVirus seems to attack 'absolute' (FF8) file-
  25. FF8 virus)         types by adding some code on to the end and then jumping
  26.                    to the new code.
  27.                    I haven't actually seen the ArchieVirus, so !Guardian
  28.                    detects it's presence but doesn't do anything about it.
  29.                    Having pointed it out, it leaves you to deal with it as
  30.                    you like.
  31.                    IF YOU LOCATE THE ARCHIE VIRUS, PLEASE CONTACT ME SO 
  32.                    THAT I CAN AMEND !GUARDIAN APPROPRIATELY.

  34. AW Module virus    Versions 2.10 upwards
  35.                    This nasty little virus inadvertantly infected the 
  36.                    February 1992 'Archimedes World' cover disc. It adds 
  37.                    itself onto the end of modules, and can be detected by
  38.                    the fact that all your modules suddenly get updated with
  39.                    todays date.
  40.                    On 9th September 1992 it will give a message stating that
  41.                    your Archimedes has been infected with a virus. It also
  42.                    gives a generation count.
  43.                    !Guardian detects any modules on disc that have been 
  44.                    infected and also provides the generation number.
  45.                    !Guardian is also capable of restoring corrupted modules
  46.                    to their original form.
  47.  
  48. Datadqm            All versions
  49.                    This is not a virus as such, due to the fact no actual
  50.                    harm is down to your discs. It merely seems to be a
  51.                    desktop 'silly' that is capable of replicating amongst
  52.                    any application NOT already having a !Boot file.
  53.  
  54. Extend             Versions 1.04 upwards automatically zap 'Extend' if found
  55.                    when !Guardian loads in.
  56.                    Versions 1.05 upwards include code to reset the machine
  57.                    if 'Extend' is detected.
  58.                    The 'Extend' virus doesn't appear to be that harmful, but
  59.                    adds 1k to the RMA space when run. If left un-checked, 
  60.                    this will fill your machine up and eventually give the
  61.                    'No Room in RMA' or memory full error.
  62.  
  63. Icon               This virus consists of a short BASIC program which is
  64.                    filetyped as a sprite and called 'ICON'. It amends the 
  65.                    following line to !Boot files (which !Guardian removes)
  66.  
  67.                          BASIC -quit <Obey$Dir>.Icon
  68.  
  69.                    If detected, !Guardian will correct the !Boot file and
  70.                    delete the sprite file called Icon.
  71.                    N.B. The Icon filer can also occur as Filer/Icon-A/Poison
  72.                    or NewVirus - !Guardian copes with all current variations.

  74. Net Manager        Versions 1.08 upwards
  75.                    No specific data available on this one.

  95. THEM TO ME ON A CLEARLY LABELLED DISC. I WILL THEN AMEND !GUARDIAN AND
  96. RETURN YOUR DISC, TOGETHER WITH THE LATEST VERSION OF !GUARDIAN.
